Deodorants, antiperspirants and anti-odorants may be applied to the same area, but they approach body odour in three different ways.
- A deodorant reduces or covers the smell.
- An antiperspirant reduces the amount of sweat.
- A ZINDEO anti-odorant works with the underarm microbiome—the community of bacteria that creates body odour.
That distinction matters because sweat itself has little smell. Unpleasant odour develops when particular bacteria break down components of sweat and transform them into volatile, odorous molecules.
What is a deodorant?
A deodorant is designed to reduce the perception of body odour without significantly reducing perspiration.
Depending on its formula, it may:
- cover odour with fragrance,
- temporarily reduce bacteria,
- absorb moisture or odorous compounds,
- change conditions on the surface of the skin.
Deodorants generally focus on the immediate result: making the underarms smell fresher after application. They do not necessarily aim to create a longer-term change in the underarm microbiome.
A strongly fragranced spray and a fragrance-free zinc formula can both be called deodorants, even though they work very differently.
What is an antiperspirant?
An antiperspirant is designed to reduce the amount of sweat reaching the skin.
It normally contains aluminium salts. When these salts react with moisture, they form temporary deposits in the upper part of the sweat ducts. This reduces perspiration in the treated area until the deposits are naturally removed.
Antiperspirants can be useful when the main concern is visible wetness. Their primary purpose, however, is to suppress sweat—not to improve the composition of the underarm microbiome.
Research has shown that antiperspirant use can substantially change the bacterial community in the underarms. This does not automatically mean that every change is harmful, but it demonstrates that blocking sweat also changes the environment in which underarm bacteria live.
What is an anti-odorant?
“Anti-odorant” is not a standardised cosmetic category. At ZINDEO, we use the term for a product designed to control body odour by deliberately influencing the underarm microbiome over time.
The goal is not simply to perfume the skin or eliminate every bacterium. The goal is to make the underarm environment less favourable to the bacterial groups associated with unpleasant odour.
A ZINDEO anti-odorant:
- does not use aluminium salts to block sweat,
- does not rely on added perfume to cover body odour,
- influences the bacterial community responsible for producing odour,
- is designed to be used as a longer-term microbiome routine,
- allows natural perspiration to continue.
You may still sweat while using ZINDEO. The difference is that the sweat is less likely to develop into an unpleasant smell.
Why the underarm microbiome matters
The underarm contains a relatively small but dense microbial community. Two of its dominant bacterial groups are Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus.
Different species and strains produce different enzymes and therefore different odorous compounds. Some bacteria create very little noticeable smell. Others transform components of sweat into sour, musky or sulphur-containing molecules.
This is why two people can sweat the same amount but smell completely different.
The composition of the microbiome also helps explain why body odour may:
- return quickly after washing,
- become stronger during puberty or hormonal changes,
- differ between the left and right underarm,
- change after switching products,
- improve gradually rather than immediately.
A conventional deodorant may reduce the smell for several hours. A microbiome-focused anti-odorant aims to change the conditions that allow the smell to be repeatedly created.
Microbiome-tested for 28 days
ZINDEO Anti-odorant Cream was independently evaluated after 28 days of daily use on ten participants.
The study found:
- 9 out of 10 participants showed increased measured microbial diversity
- 7 out of 10 showed a reduction in total bacterial count while diversity increased
- reductions were observed in bacterial groups associated with underarm odour
The results show that ZINDEO affected the structure of the underarm microbiome without acting as simple broad-spectrum disinfection.
Microbial diversity alone is not a universal measure of skin health. The composition of the bacterial community also matters. The relevant result is therefore the combination of increased measured diversity, reduced total bacterial counts in most participants and reductions in odour-associated groups.
Clinically tested odour control
A separate split-underarm study evaluated the fragrance-free ZINDEO Anti-odorant Cream against an untreated underarm.
The treated underarm showed:
- 92% lower odour intensity after 24 hours
- significant odour reduction after 48 hours
- a measurable effect lasting up to 72 hours after one application
The study measured body odour, not sweat reduction. ZINDEO controlled odour while natural perspiration continued.
Hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis are different
Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating beyond what is needed for normal temperature regulation.
Bromhidrosis means persistent or unusually strong body odour.
A person can have one without the other. Someone may sweat heavily but have little odour, while another person may sweat less but have a microbiome that produces a strong smell.
An anti-odorant can help control body odour. It is not a medical treatment for excessive sweating.
Which product should you choose?
Choose an antiperspirant if your main priority is reducing sweat and visible wet patches.
Choose a conventional deodorant if you mainly want short-term freshness or fragrance.
Choose a ZINDEO anti-odorant if you want to control body odour by working with the underarm microbiome while allowing natural perspiration to continue.
